young shepherd who left school

A picture showing a young shepherd...Who is trying to fill his bottle with potable water using a teapot...From what the river has left there.

It’s obvious that he is just a kid, and that he may have left school earlier to look after their family’s cattle.

In the past every Moroccan village has its own shepherd, he is a man whose job is to herd their cattle for a monthly wage. Every family sends their sheep with him in the early morning…he gathers all the cattle and lead them to the lea. So every family is giving their part to pay for the shepherd, their part of money differs according to the numbers of a family’s sheep.

Nowadays, because of the drought and desertification and because of other factors like emigration from villages to near cities … sheep is becoming fewer and fewer, so villagers can’t afford to pay the wage of a shepherd. For these reasons, children leave their school classes to herd their family’s five to ten rams.

In order to fight the problem of leaving school classes in the Moroccan poor villages, successive governments have created a helping program particularly designed for this category of students. This program is built on helping families or mothers who are sending their children to schools in these poor villages. This program is designed only for primary school levels. So, every child is getting a monthly aid which is:

First level: 6 dollars per month

Second level: 6 dollars per month

Third level: 8 dollars per month

Fourth level: 8 dollars per month

Fifth level: 10 dollars per month

Sixth level: 10 dollars per month

Some could consider this very tiny help, but for the villagers it’s enough for them to keep sending their kids to schools.
